About Amaia Oiz

Amaia Oiz is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Dating and Sex Empowerment Coach, Yoga Teacher, Cycle Awareness Mentor, and Mystic.

I have over 23 years of experience in inspiring the transformation of consciousness through yoga philosophy, mindfulness practices, and psychology - the study of the soul (from the Greek word psykhe- that which animates the physical body). Psychotherapy and Yoga have many parallels. These parallels converge on self-awareness, transformational awakening, and one’s deep relationship with their nature. This practice and world view has led me to a deep understanding and passion for psychotherapy. As a holistic therapist I integrate Eastern and Western medicine practices to deliver evidence-based healing modalities. There are many ways to get to the same place.

How Amaia works with clients:

In our first session, I want to learn about what brings you into therapy and other important aspects of your life. We call this a biopsychosocial, and it is a cohesive way to understand more about you and your life up to this point. Throughout our sessions I use modalities that focus on empathetic rapport, unlearning social programs, processing trauma and grief, stabilizing imbalances, and mind body connection. I am ultimately guided by my intuition, life experience, and expertise in the field. It is my life's work to change the world to a more compassionate and loving place, which I believe starts from within.

All of my work with clients is trauma informed and I am intentional with the never ending journey of multicultural competence. From a very young age I have worked passionately to dismantle oppression. None of us escape the programing of discrimination but we do get to choose to actively fight against it. Being acutely aware of the array of trauma that we carry with us, I work collaboratively with clients to empower an active role in treatment.

How I enjoy life.

As you can probably tell already, I love learning. You will find me moving about my day with either an audiobook or music playing. Music just animates life doesn't it?

Having practiced yoga for over two decades I keep finding unique ways to keep it interesting. Currently, I am using a yoga swing on my rooftop balcony and I also love to practice balance on a paddle board. For off the mat yoga practices I have recently taken a dive into Quantum Physics and am fascinated with how it explains my understanding of spirituality in parallel with science.

Like many others, I love to travel. My parents taught me young, that when traveling, it is most beneficial, to as much as possible, live like a local. This value is still with me today. When we are out and about in the world I find joy in discovering unique experiences (not the well known tourist attractions), eating at local restaurants, and making friends with locals. I also call where I lay my head home because I have learned that home is wherever I go. And I was a 90s fan of Metallica. My brain is 50% song lyrics. As in my nature, I often study the history and culture of a place I am visiting and will always watch Anthony Bourdain's show for the location and good eats.

My partner and I both work from home and enjoy the freedom it brings to our life. We eat most meals together, collaborate on home projects, and are able to have regular rituals of connection. It is the little things that count!

I love all animals! We have 2 dogs. An all black German Sheppard named Onyx and a 14 year old minpin named Myla. Pets can be one of the most rewarding relationships.

Training and Experience

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Registered Yoga Teacher, Cycle Awareness Mentor, and Mystic. I earned my graduate degree in Counseling and Educational Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno in 2015 after completing my first masters degree in Educational Leadership at the University of Nevada, Reno in 2012. My Bachelor of Science in Psychology was completed in 2007 at the University of Oregon-Cascades campus. I am trained in Level 1 Gottman Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy. In 2000, I completed my first 200-hour yoga teacher training at It’s Yoga in San Francisco, CA. Finally, I have undergone many yoga and ancient lineage trainings and initiatory journeys.

Dating and Sexual Empowerment coaching comes from my experience in working with clients, pleasure activism, and training in attachment theory. Over the years I have supported many people though heartbreak and the rebuilding of new relationships. Using an attachment lens I can identify the unconscious patterns that have been getting in your way for far too long and teach you how to have a secure and satisfying love life. I support you breaking free from our cultures sexually oppressive and gender biased norms to find the pleasure you desire.

It is through the Red School in which I gained my Cycle Awareness training. Mensural Cycle Awareness is a way of knowing yourself, harnessing your feminine power, and claiming your place in the world. It is a feminine spiritual practice that honors our cyclical nature and leads us to our calling.

I have dedicated 25+ years to understanding consciousness and the human condition. This has led me to many countries to study various cultures and I have worked with masters, shamans, spiritual leaders, psychotherapy experts, and academic experts. The mystical plays a valid and important role in my life.

I understand the courage it takes to do the work because I have spent over 25 years immersed in personal development and spiritual growth.
